Father Gregory and Frederica Mathewes-Green St. Spyridon Orthodox Church, Loveland, CO November 1, 3 and 4th
With great joy and anticipation, St. Spyridon Orthodox Church is pleased to announce the visit of Fr. Gregory & Frederica Mathewes-Green to our parish from Nov 1-4, 2018. Frederica will speak after the Liturgy for Sts. Cosmas and Damian on November 1 (around 11:00) about her life as a Khouria (the title of an Antiochian priest’s wife) and as an Orthodox writer. After Vespers (6:00pm) on November 3rd, Fr. Gregory will reflect on his 40 years of experiences as a parish priest. Free-will offerings will be taken. Father Gregory will also give the Homily during the Liturgy on Sunday November 4th. There will be refreshments after each event.
Fr. Gregory is the founding pastor of Holy Cross Orthodox Church, located in Linthicum, MD. He was an Episcopal priest for 15 years before he made the decision to enter Holy Orthodoxy. Fr. Gregory was chrismated and ordained in January 1993. He encountered the Orthodox Church when attending an informal gathering of Protestant clergy with Fr. Peter Gillquist.
In 1993, Fr. Gregory, his family, and 14 others formed the nucleus of a new mission in Baltimore, MD - Holy Cross Orthodox Mission. In 1996, the mission, having significantly grown, began looking for a permanent building. In 1997 the
congregation moved to their current location in Linthicum, MD. Holy Cross Orthodox Church continues to flourish and grow. Four former members of Holy Cross have gone to seminary and been ordained to the priesthood.
Fr. Gregory recently retired and moved to Tennessee where he will assist his son at Christ the Savior Greek Orthodox Church, in Bluff City, TN and help serve at Christ the Savior Antiochian Church in Anderson, SC.
Frederica Mathewes-Green, the first “Khouria” of Holy Cross Church, is an author and speaker. She has written 10 books on Orthodoxy. She also writes movie reviews and commentary for National Review Online, and other articles for a wide range of publications including Christianity
Today, Books & Culture, and First Things.
In addition to her books and other writing, Frederica speaks at colleges, conventions, and churches across the country. Since 1997, Frederica has been recording books for the blind with the Radio Reading Network of Maryland.
She and Fr. Gregory have been married since 1974 and have three children and fourteen grandchildren.
